You Gotta' Love 'Im!
Mr. Bush is a fucker. You may be surprised to hear it, but it's true. You've probably got a few reasons to want him struck in the garbage repeatedly by a football-kicking mule, but here's the latest: He has authorized wiretaps on American citizens without warrants more than 30 times!! There are already talks of impeachment. Nothing would make me happier than to have this low-life kicked out of office.

i fully support the use of spying on americans. (not really sarcasm, actually) as long as we let anyone stream across our borders, i have no problem with the government listening to my cell phone calls. i don't do anything illegal, so i don't really care who is keeping tabs on me.
I care. It's not a matter of having something to hide. What bothers me is that we have all these laws that we must obey as American citizens, yet the people who create and enforce these laws are not held to the same standards.
Every time they infringe on one of your rights, they're making room to infringe on the rest of them.
they already infringe on my right to free speech by attempting to stop me from mentioning that the reason for our school vacation is christmas. not chunukah, not the holiday made up by an incarcerated felon, but the holiday with a religious figure's name in it. that is besides the point except to say that the concept of "freedom" differs greatly from one person to the next.
we are not safe in this country due to the fact that simple procedures that would really be effective in preventing terrorism (e.g. racial profiling, border control) are considered insensitive and politically incorrect. our current notion of "freedom" means very little without safety and common sense (not that the bush administration has addressed the first with anything that resembles the second).
in fact, since we're kind of on the subject, i am much more disturbed by the status of our government when we are forced to choose between two obviously incompetent and regressive thinking candidates for the office of commander-in-chief than i am by any decisions these guys eventually make.
You mentioned differing definitions for, "freedom," and I think the term, "rights," falls in the same category. I don't believe in rights, as used in the Constitution and our sorry little blog entries. Though stated explicitly in the Constitution, none of the rights granted therein are inalienable.
Thus, the aformentioned, "Christmas Vs. Holidays," issue. In this instance, your right to free speech is in direct conflict with my right to have freedom from religion and vice verse (whether one of us is right or wrong is entire other discussion). With that said, I guess I kind of expect us all to play by the same set of rules.
As a white, American-born male, it may be a bit easier for you to justify racial profiling than for, say, a second generation American-born male from India. You wouldn't have to deal with racial profiling EVER, unless we had some sort of European invasion.
Suppose alcohol became illegal again in the name of Safety. Would it then be ok for the police to randomly enter your home with absolutely no probable cause? Or would you lean on the Constitution?
Laws are created to protect us from our government as much as they are created to protect us from each other. I'd just like to see them applied as such.
do you ever wish anyone else participated in our discussions?
It'd be nice, but I have a Yahoo! group where I can get this kind of discussion in addition to discussions about farts, music, clowns, etc.
I care too. But as a slave to robots, I have lost so many freedoms that whatever the Bush-chimp does fails to impress. I only wish my phone was tapped. I only wish I could move about without wearing a containment suit.
Sigh
All hail the Rev,
MB1
The President has constitutional authority to collect foreign intelligence. In 1972, a court ruled that wire-tapping communications between US citizens and foreigners is legal. The Constitution’s framers did not vest absolute power in any branch of the federal government, including the courts, but they did create a strong executive and equipped the office with sufficient authority to act energetically to defend the national interest in wartime. That is what President Bush has done, and nothing more.
